Ware Episcopal Church, Gloucester, Virginia, is seeking a parish secretary.  The parish secretary reports directly to the rector (priest/minister).  The parish secretary exercises his or her particular gifts, talents, and abilities to promote the ministry of Jesus Christ as received and lived out by the people of Ware Church. Ware is in a time of positive transition and seeks a secretary who will take the administrative life of the parish forward.  Ideal candidates are highly organized individuals who are self-motivated and excel in working independently while carrying out the duties and tasks assigned by the rector.


  • ·         Familiar with the liturgies of the Episcopal Church or other liturgical traditions is helpful
  • ·         Excellent in-person, telephone, email and other types of communication skills
  • ·         Proficient in online mass communication programs and schedulers
  • ·         Familiar with website maintenance
  • ·         Skilled in using Microsoft Office – with particular skill with Publisher and Word


  • ·         Prepare/Publish weekly worship bulletins
  • ·         Prepare/Publish monthly “Grapevine”
  • ·         Prepare/Publish weekly “e-Vine”
  • ·         Answer telephone
  • ·         Respond to general email inquiries
  • ·         Receive visitors during normal working hours
  • ·         Collect and sort the mail
  • ·         Process gift acknowledgement letters
  • ·         Coordinate the processing of facility use agreements of parish buildings
  • ·         Maintain and order office supplies
  • ·         Maintain church member database in cooperation with the rector
  • ·         Maintain online church calendar
  • ·         Assist with website content
  • ·         Provide clerical support to other church groups as approved and tasked by the rector
  • ·         Prepare quarterly lay worship leader schedules
  • ·         Other occasional duties as assigned by rector


  • ·         Engage to work 16 hours a week = 4, four hour days (negotiable)
  • ·         Pay ranges from $12 - $15 an hour (negotiable) – contingent upon qualifications and experience
  • ·         Overtime paid at time-and-a-half (must be approved by the rector prior to working over).
  • ·         Two weeks of annual paid vacation
  • ·         Sick leave within reason
  • ·         One week of annual community engagement leave (approved by rector)
  • ·         “Child Involvement” leave (negotiated with rector)
  • ·         Four-month probationary period
  • ·         Six-month performance review
  • ·         Full, two-year work covenant considered at the end of four-month probationary period.
