Hurricane Harvey Response

Dear Parish family,

The news coming out of Texas and Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Harvey is heartbreaking.  Those impacted by this horrendous natural disaster are trying to make sense of what happened, discover what they lost and what they still have, and, most importantly, looking to how they will emerge from this catastrophe and what life will look like going forward.

Many have asked how we can respond.  We can respond by opening our hearts and our hands.  Right now, those agencies on the ground in Texas and Louisiana are assessing the situation to see what the needs will be and how best people can respond to those needs.  Right now, what we can do is pray and assist financially.  Once it is clear what additional help is needed, we will respond to that as well.

Pray.  Pray for those who have lost their lives and the consolation of their families.  Pray for those who lost everything they owned as now find themselves like strangers in their own land.  Pray for those in Texas and Louisiana who want to help those in their community, but find that they are unable to help because their own lives have been forever changed, their resources destroyed, or they themselves not in a condition to help.  Pray for those who are risking their own lives to search for and save others.  Pray for healing, understanding, compassion, and patience.

This coming Sunday, September 3, is the first Sunday of the month, and so being, the loose plate offering is designated to the Rector’s Discretionary Fund.  At my discretion, I am giving all the loose plate offering to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.  I urge you to give generously on Sunday for the relief of the victims of Hurricane Harvey.  Please mark the special donations you give with the note “Hurricane Harvey Relief” and place that donation in the offering plate with your regular Sunday giving.  I’ll make sure that all Hurricane Harvey Relief donations are forwarded to those in need immediately. I am also designating the first Sunday in October’s discretionary offering to go to Hurricane Harvey relief as well.

Below you will find a link to the Presiding Bishop’s Message on Hurricane Harvey, a link to our diocesan response page if you wish to give directly to Episcopal Relief and Development, and you will find a couple of prayers.

Additional information will be coming as to what more we can do.  And now, keep praying.

A Collect for Aid against Perils

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Almighty God from whom comes every good gift, the source of all protection, the comfort of those who suffer: look mercifully on the people of Texas and Louisiana who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey; be with those who have lost everything in the floods, and comfort all who now seek to find a way forward to rebuild their lives; guide our hearts to respond to their needs; enliven our desire to open our hearts and hands, and give us all the assurance that in things we cannot understand, you are present with us to show us the path of righteousness and grace.  All this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ who with the Holy Spirit live and reigns with you, now and forever. Amen.
