Grant AmbroseGrant Ambrose, Rector
The Rev’d Grant Ambrose answered the call to become the 19th “called” rector of Ware Parish in November 2014, coming to Ware Church from St. Mary’s, Arlington, Virginia.  He began his association with St. Mary’s while attending Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) in Alexandria to earn his Masters of Divinty degree. Following graduation from VTS, Grant was ordained to the sacred Order of Deacons at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Washington, NC, on June 11, 2011, by the Right Reverend Clifton "Dan" Daniels, 3rd, Bishop of the Diocese of East Carolina.  Grant was asked to stay on at St. Mary’s as Asssistant and eventually Associate Rector.  He was ordained to the sacred Order of Priests at St. Mary's on January 25, 2012, by the Right Reverend J. Mark Dyer, retired Bishop of Bethlehem (PA).  While serving at St. Mary's, Grant had responsibility for adult education, mission and outreach, pastoral care, and of course regularly leading worship and preaching.

Grant is a fifth-generation Episcopalian who grew up in Eastern North Carolina.  He was an active member of Galilee Mission Episcopal Church church in Creswell, NC, where he was elected to Vestry as a high school student, and elected Senior Warden at the age of 21.

Grant has a strong personal interest in history, particularly early American colonial history and church history. He graduated from college with a double-major in English and in History. He taught AP English and History at an independent school in Merry Hill, NC. He was also employed as an interpreter by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. In Northern Virginia, Grant has taught adult education classes on church history, with one activity being Saturday field trips to historic Episcopal churches.

Grant was married to his wife, Martha, by Bishop Shannon Johnston in April, 2013.

Charles Humphries, Music Director

Charles Humphries was born in England and has studied music since the age of 7 where he was a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral. He continued his education at one of the top public schools in the country and then won a scholarship to study voice at the Royal Academy of Music in London. There he received the Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) for services to music. Along with his vocal studies he mastered the piano, flute and organ as secondary instruments. From 1993 he worked in the freelance world and became known as one of the foremost counter tenors of his generation. Working in opera houses, concert halls and recital venues he has collaborated and worked with some of the world’s leading conductors and orchestras. He has recorded for many main stream labels with a discography reaching around 50 recordings.

In 2009 he moved to the USA where he continued his freelancing work and has lived in diverse areas such as Washington DC, New York and now Gloucester, Va. In New York he was a member of the men and boys choir at St Thomas church, 5th avenue. His move to the Virginia region was primarily due to an opening at the living museum at Colonial Williamsburg and during that time he created a thriving private voice studio within the region as well as continuing his solo vocal work and has  continued his instrumental skills. Before being appointed as Director of Music at Ware he was Interim director of music at St Andrews, Episcopal church, Oregon Hill, Richmond.

He now lives in Gloucester with his partner and lovable ageing chocolate labrador, Mixa.
